In conjunction with the upcoming holy Ramadan for Muslims, we carried out a random
street interview among medical students of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia to test their knowledge
and understanding about fasting. The students interviewed were those in year 1 until year 3, from
different races and religions. Based on the interview, we found out interesting point of view of the
students.

Our first ever Minisode: Voice of Student has been done by Preesha and Anis from the Public Relation department on the 14th of March.

The theme for this minisode is Fasting Month for Muslims.

Athirah, first year medical student, expressed her opinion that fasting helped to improve hypertension. Ramadan fasting was proven effective in reducing both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. She also claimed that the most common food can be found in Bazaar Ramadan is Ayam
Percik, one of her favourite food.

Aqma from year one was asked about her knowledge on metabolism taking place in human body when one is fasting, she answered ketogenesis in which ketone bodies are produced from oxidation of fatty acids or ketogenic amino acids to provide energy when the glucose intake is insufficient. She also agreed that fasting helped to improve blood glucose level.

Adrian, year 2 medical student, thought that fasting helped to lose weight with the process of burning fat stored in the body in order to provide energy when there is less intake of food during fasting.

Syafirah, a year 3 medical student stated that fasting during Ramadan is not only one of the pillars of Islamic belief but also helped to train Muslims’ patience.

Although the interview was carried out to a very small portion of the students, we believe that everyone has their own insight regarding fasting. Fasting is truly a beneficial practice that we should never deny.
